In Her Shoes

Was a party yesterday
she put on her favourite dress-
there were a lot to impress.

She looked fine
with her shiny scarf
and painted eyelashes,
and the newly bought shoes,
and the way she let her hair loose.

She looked into the mirror
with the conceit of a devil,
with the pride of a sinner.
Beneath her innocent eyes
were the wisdom of world and skies,
appreciation of her beauty
was her usual nocturnal duty.

The new dress was a little unfit
she didn't feel so comfortable
though it made her look quite saleable.

She reached the gathering duly-
there were so many at sight
...to see and to show
was on a perfect go.

so many stares,
some loving looks
A lot of them trying
to be in her good books

Some unwanted smiles
some lustful gaze
enough they were
to set her all ablaze.

A few reserved act of men
was still never a blame-
she knew alright
it was all part of the game.

It was all expected
it was all wished,
yet it seemed so usual-
but the stage set was crucial.

And even it did sometimes hurt her feet-
the new shoes being new were still alright.

Night was speeding by
strangers were passing by
but sky and moon were amused
by her condescending moves.

Men did all to get her one loving look
but she wouldn't pay any heed.
so many in her way to adore
but none too right
to take her out of the door.

"People are so predictable"
she thought,
"None out of the league-
every time its the same story
they cannot be any better
perhaps it had to be all bitter"

She reached home late at night
and threw off her shoes so tight.
Then she put on the gown and
finally felt relieved of the frown.

The tired eyes looked for peace,
the aching feet longed for rest,
the bewildered mind needed silence
all of them out of jest

The breeze was blowing cool
the trees were whispering slow
beneath the usual cloth
she felt herself.

No more pretense
no more hassle
not anymore
queen of the castle

she threw the mirror away
beauty was not needed
comfort was all that she heeded

and listening to the distant star's beep
she lulled her way deep into sleep.

Moon and the sky were amused
but they both had got used.

"I don't have many clues"
said the moon to the sky,
"but it must be difficult to be in her shoes"
